The architectural basis for the Church in the name of the Holy preeminent apostles Peter and Paul, designed in Neo-Byzantine style. From the foundation of Odessa to the beginning of the 20th century the two most distinct architectural styles were the Classical style, typical for the more early buildings that date back to the founding of the city, and the Neo-Byzantine style, appeared by the end of the 19th century.

Since 1840, a new style, gravitating towards the historical epic, began to develop in Western art. In the Russian Empire, a new style developed, renewing its own traditions. In temple architecture, ancient Byzantine forms were revived – the neo-Byzantine style.

The Panteleimon Compound was opened in 1876, the church with new buildings was built in 1893-96 (architect N.N. Nikonov), Andreevskoe Compoun was equipped in 1884, first in a specially purchased house, and in 1894-96 the church and new buildings were built, the foundation of the Andreevskoe Compound took place in 1885. The Ilyinskoe Compound was founded in 1884. Thus, during the period of increasing pilgrimage flow, three courtyards were ready to receive pilgrims.

During this time period, several other churches in the Neo-Byzantine style were built in Odessa. For instance, the Church of St. Gregory the Theologian and St. Martyr Zoe was built on Staroportofrankovskaya Street.
